The Ministry of Education has identified a decline in results of achievement for students who sat for their Fiji Year 6 Examination this year compared to the Year 6 results of 2008.
Minister for Education Dr. Mahendra Reddy made this revelation when opening the new teachers quarters at Veivatuloa village.
He said all other subjects except Vosa Vaka Viti and Mathematics have pass rates below 50%.
Dr Reddy said this revelation demonstrates that they now have to work very hard in the Primary School system to improve students understanding of the basic foundation knowledge so that they perform well in High School and beyond.
“That shows the problems is not in the High School, the problem is here in the Primary School. Our teachers have put down their guards, our students were not worried because there were no exams scaling has done a lot of damage to our exam system” said Dr Reddy
The Minister said re‑introducing examinations this year is to ensure that they get the correct picture of the quality of students and teachers they have in the system.
“And today we have show the results English pass mark in 2008 was 70 percent, today in this year is 31 percent our teachers will have to work hard 3 times next year to fulfill this children dream come true” said Dr Reddy
