Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 7.02.26 PMThe Ministry of Health confirms that 2 tourists were treated in the country for Zika Virus last year.

700 blood samples of suspected cases were also sent for laboratory confirmation.

Dr Mike Kama National advisor Communicable Diseases said the two tourists were treated before they left the country.

“Yes the Ministry has been notified of 2 confirmed laboratory cases of Zika Virus from last year those are the only 2 we have confirmed so far for Fiji”

While there are no confirmed cases of the Zika Virus however samples of suspected cases have been sent for testing.

“Well basically nothing laboratory confirmed and there have been suspected cases of Zika Virus,we’ve sent off their blood for laboratory confirmation at our reference labs in French Polynesia and they’ve come back negative, we’ve sent almost 700 samples to the laboratory, all serum samples testing for Zika virus so that’s our situation right now”

The Ministry also advises the virus symptoms are very similar to dengue fever.

“Identifying the signs and symptoms of Zika and Dengue is important as they are almost the same as I mentioned, so again fever, red eyes, rash and joint pains and so forth so these are the main symptoms one identifies and once when these symptoms manifest people are advised to seek the nearest health facility for diagnosis to happen and also treatment”

Meanwhile the country has so far confirmed 85 dengue cases, 43 from the North, 40 from the West and 2 in the Central Division.
