The US Government will continue to partner with Fiji in promoting global peace and security.
This is particularly through military cooperation.
“We very much recognize and commend the role that the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces play in international peacekeeping around the world and through our security assistance. We have also supported them with some of their deployments with training with certain equipment to help them and we’re increasing our engagement in general in terms of our security cooperation,” said Judith Cefkin, the U.S. Ambassador to Fiji.
The partnership will also see the arrival of the ‘USS William P. Lawrence’ in Fiji.
This is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.
“You probably remember that we had a very successful visit of the US the US hospital ship Mercy here last June and that visit helped us to work together on humanitarian support to communities and to build the cooperation so that when we have to work together to face natural disasters we can do that more effectively again that’s one example we have another ship visit after that and we’re actually expecting another ship that’s going to be coming for a routine port of call later this week so that’s another area of focus for us,” added ambassador Cefkin.
