Screen shot 2016-03-02 at 7.10.52 PMA week after Tropical Cyclone Winston, stories of heroism and narrow escapes continue to unfold.

A 33-year old father of 3 on Malake Island had a near death experience during the height of the cyclone.

Malake Village also felt the full brunt of the disaster.

33 year old Sevanaia Nadru is counting his lucky stars.

He is just happy to be alive as the roof of his house fell on him during the height of the cyclone, missing him merely by inches.

” I just managed to push the roof out, tried to free my leg, I was just calling my wife and kids, they helped me out. I wasn’t able to work by myself ” said Nadru

Just like him, other villagers also might not forget that night as more than 100 houses were blown away within minutes.

“You can look around, all the houses are damaged. Only 5 houses are left here. 15 people were injured by flying debris. ” said Samuela Sivoi – Turaga ni Koro- Malake Village

More than a week after the cyclone, villagers are still trying to clear up there debris and get back to normal lives.

“We have lost our farms. Cassava plantations are destroyed. But we thank the government to supply the ration that can take us for a month.” Sivoi

Looking at the extent of devastation here on this island, it surely will take time for people to get back to normal life.
