Malake IslandClean drinking water has been restored on Malake Island since Cyclone Winston devastated the islands water supply system.

This is possible after the island’s Water Scheme Committee took the pro-active approach to assist in repairing its water supply system.

After the cyclone there was no piped water supply reaching the around 400 inhabitants on the island through its 20,000 litre reservoir tank.

Through a government funded scheme – a 3.5 kilometre underwater pipeline was installed by the Water Authority of Fiji in 2014 to provide Malake Island with fresh drinking water from WAF’s Rakiraki pumping station.

The Malake Water Committee with the villagers repaired the standpipes with WAF carrying out the major repairs to the underwater system.

It took around three weeks for the works to be completed.
