Sexual offences record a surge

fiji-police-salus-populiA total of 284 rape and attempted rape cases were recorded last year.

This is an increase of 16 percent or 38 more cases compared to 2014.

The statistics were released by the Fiji Police Force’s Crime Statistics Annual Report.

Sexual offences was among serious offences that recorded an increase last year.

This is according to the Fiji Police Force Crime Statistics Annual Report 2015.

A total of 282 Rape and Attempted Rape cases were recorded last year compared to 246 for 2014.

When looking at child sexual abuse by age distribution the rape of children aged 6 to 12 years old recorded an increase.

A total of 146 victims were recorded for 2014 compared to 166 victims last year.

Among the 17 types of sexual offences committed, rape was the highest, with a total of 206 cases in 2014 compared to 252 last year.

The abduction of a person under 18 years of age with intent to have carnal knowledge was the second highest sexual offence recorded.

A total of 116 cases were recorded for 2014 while 72 were recorded for 2015.

For cases of attempt to commit rape 40 was recorded for 2014 while 30 was recorded for last year.

For sexual assaults a total of 43 cases were recorded for 2014 while 67 cases were reported for 2015.

No attempts to commit rape was recorded for 2014 while 2 were reported last year.

The Police Commissioner Brigidaier General Sitiveni Qiliho in his statement highlights that the Fiji Police Force with all its resources will combat crisme and delinquency in our society.
