Screen shot 2016-04-03 at 6.45.30 PMAnother depression is expected, as Tropical Depression 14 is now causing flooding in Rakiraki.

The progression of both Tropical Depressions are being monitored.

Na Draki Meteorologist Neville Koop said “The first we will likely pass us the South West of us tomorrow night,Monday night and then the second one probably during the daytime around Wednesday. At this there is probably a moderate risk they could reach a Category Cyclone 1 strength but they could equally stay just a depression.”

Areas that will be affected are the Northern and Western Divisions, especially the Mamanuca and Yasawa group.

Wind speeds of 60 to 77 kilometers per hour are strong enough to knock down structures that are not solid enough, like tents and tarpaulins.

A main concern is the rain that will be caused by the Tropical Depressions.

He adds “Either way they’re not going to be of a similar strength at all to Cyclone Winston this is not another Cyclone Winston this is a tropical depression. While it does not have the winds that Winston had this event could potentially bring very heavy rain and flash flooding with a potential of a river flooding perhaps in the middle of the week.”

The Minister for National Disaster and Management, Inia Se-rui-ratu says the National Disaster Management Office is on stand-by.

Se-rui-ratu adds their teams are on the ground monitoring the situation and will step in when the need arises.
