Concerns have been raised by Opposition member and National Federation Party Leader Dr Biman Prasad on the national disaster management by authorities.
Prasad said there needs to be much better coordinated control and dissemination of information on natural disasters.
“I think that we could have had a much better coordination between the DISMAC officials , other agencies like Police, Education Ministry, and all those involved particularly the weather office because what we’ve seen is information being reported by the media has confused a lot of people and notices such as closure of schools , restriction of movement” said Prasad
However National Disaster Management Office Director Akapusi Tuifagalele argued otherwise.
Tuifagalele said the coordination has been up to par and authorities have been working around the clock on the response.
He said regular information has been provided by the weather office and respective divisional offices.
“The coordination has been good all along but if the people had actually been asking because of the decision that was made on Wednesday(restriction of movement), it was based on the existing declared natural disaster that we were in , it was not a new one because of Zena, it was already there because of Winston” said Tuifagalele
