The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has increased it’s surveillance after 166 leptospirosis cases have been detected so far.
The steady increase comes after 66 cases were recorded for the same period last year.
With the disease often difficult to diagnose clinically, the Ministry is urging members of the public to seek medical assistance immediately.
In a statement, the Ministry adds the risk of contracting leptospirosis can be greatly reduced by not swimming or wading in water that might be contaminated with animal urine, or eliminating contact with potentially infected animals.
