eight_col_Highlanderscelebrate4The Highlanders says they’ve agreed to meet European rugby champions Toulon in a one-off game in Hong Kong in February.

The Highlanders get their hands on the prize after winning the Super 15 competition for the first time.
According to the French newspaper L’Equipe talks have been going on for two months and have now reached a successful conclusion.

The fixture will be held on February 6th, the same date as the first matches of next year’s Six Nations between France and Italy along with Scotland and England.

The Highlanders beat New Zealand rivals the Hurricanes to win the Super Rugby title for the first time, while Toulon made it three straight European crowns by beating Clermont at Twickenham.

Plans for a similar match between Toulon and the Chiefs and then Toulon and the Waratahs have fallen through in the past two years.

The Highlanders say the game would be an integral part of their preseason campaign for 2016.

Highlanders General Manager, Roger Clark, said “obviously it’s a significant opportunity and it would be the first time the Highlanders have matched up against a European side.”

“It’s fair to say the coaching group are excited by the prospect. While there are still a number of operational and compliance issues to work through we do have agreement in principle.”
