Duo appears in court for circulation of fake notes

Screen shot 2016-05-20 at 7.07.35 PMTwo people charged with 2 counts of uttering with intent to utter counterfeit notes were denied bail today.

The duo were presented before the Nadi Magistrates Court this afternoon.

32 year old businessman Kamlesh Chandra and 20 year old Josivini Vameau are alleged to have been in possession and tendered the fake 100 dollar bills at a nightclub in Nadi.

The alleged incident occurred between 13th and 14th May when the duo tendered in 17 100 dollar counterfeit notes to the cashier of the club.

Prosecution objected to bail.

Police prosecutor Dinesh Chand told magistrate Chandni Dias that investigations are ongoing and if released, the two can interfere in the investigations.

Chand also told court that if released, the circulation of counterfeit notes may continue and it is a case of public interest.

Adding to his basis of objecting bail, Chand adds alleged actions by Chandra and Vameau has resulted in a loss to public.

First accused Kamlesh Chandra told the court that police did not give him the medicines that were prescribed to him by his doctor during the investigations.

Second Accussed Josivini Vameau told the court that she was threatened to give evidence.

Police prosecution said they will look into this matter.

The duo have opted to be represented by the Legal Aid Commission.

They were taken to the Commission’s office straight after their appearance.

The matter will now be called on June 3rd.
