Fiji’s transport industry contributes about 15 percent to GDP.
563 million dollars has been allocated for the Transport industry for the 2016-2017 budget.
Today key players of Transport from government and the private sector gathered at Novotel in Lami for the 2016 National Transport Consultative Bi-annual.
Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Paul Bayly says Fiji is dependent on the transport industry to drive the economy.
The priority areas of focus are to improve land and maritime transport infrastructure and explore alternative reliable and affordable transport fuels.
This includes renewable energy sources in order to reduce Fiji’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Currently, Fiji uses about 65 percent of its total imported fuels of around 500 million litres a year on transportation including land, maritime and air which equates to around 1 billion Fijian dollars.
Bayly says the Ministry has completed the new land transport policy and the new maritime Transport Policy which aims to address the issue of sustainable transport.
