The National Federation Party has called for the review of the national minimum wage rate which is currently $2.32.
The NFP says Fijian need a just and living wage.
Shadow Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad says employers were quick to embrace the minimum wage rate and are excessively eager to support government policies which they know can be detrimental in the long term.
Prof Biman called on employers to understand that ultimately only a just and living wage for workers will increase productivity.
“In our view that is a ridiculous minimum wage rte anyway, so we look forwrad to that review and we expect the government to come up with a better minimum wage for our people. We also need to look at sectoral wages and whether we need to get those reviewed as well,” Prof Prasad said.
The national minimum wage rate was increased from $2 per hour to $2.32 per hour almost five months after the general elections in 2014.
This after a submission made to Cabinet by the then Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jioji Konrote.
