SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula has slammed the decision made by the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Itaukei land Trust Board Voreqe Bainimarama to deposit 12 point 5 million dollars in trust for more than 30,000 minors when they turn 18.
Nawaikula says the Prime Minister needs to stay out of the TLTB.
He claims this is basically vote buying.
“The Prime minister should stop meddling in the affairs of the indigenous Fijians he should not be the chairman he should not be the appointing authority and he knows that he knows that the law is very very clear that the rights of the indigenous people enshrined under the UN declaration of indigenous rights as well as ILO convention which Fiji has signed which requires and demands Fiji to allow it’s indigenous people to run their own affairs.” said Nawaikula.
Nawaikula is also exploring other steps to take.
“The other point to do is to take it to court judicial review that the decision is unfair it’s in breech of the rights of indigenous Fijians to be making determination on things that could concern them that is the next step we will consider.” he said.
