The Fiji Labour Party has asked the Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights to withdraw the proposed Information Bill 2016.
Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry in his submission said the bill needs to be re-written.
He claims the bill is riddled with red tape and denies ordinary Fijians access to information.
“This bill is nothing about accessing information its about restricting information, now this is a serious matter because we can’t have people proposing legislation of this kind, passing it off as legislation which satisfies certain provisions in the constitution intact it acts contrary to to the objectives of those provisions, there has to be an explanation.”
Chaudhry has also questioned the Chair of the committee as to why there was not enough public debate on the Bill.
