Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy while opening the Industry Academia Providers Collaboration Meeting said tertiary institutes have a significant role toward changing this.

Our tertiary institute graduates lack expertise in a number of areas.

Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy made the comments while opening the first Industry Academia Collaboration Meeting said this a concern that tertiary institutes need to look into.

“Ladies and gentlemen while we are gathered here today. I would also like to remind you about the serious flaws in the quality of high education graduates that is produced by our higher education institutions. They lack soft skills, lack in the competencies of English proficiency, unable to think outside the box, poor research capabilities, they also tend to think that there is a labor market that is waiting to give them a job,” said Dr Mahendra Reddy (Minister for Education)

Graduates are also being encouraged to explore programmes on offer on entrepreneurship.

“We need to undertake major re-thinking of the approach that we’ve adopted to provide higher education training in terms of ensuring that those coming out of our higher education institutions are thinking about establishing their own businesses until such time they can do that, we will be short changing government’s effort to promote, expand the economy by help to attract more entrepreneurship,” said Dr Reddy.

Dr Reddy added Fiji is moving in the direction where it wants to build a knowledge based society.
