Construction into Stage 2 of the Lagilagi housing settlement is well underway.
Peoples Community Network hopes this housing project is the answer to addressing informal housing.
It will consist of another 76 units, a community hall and kindergarten.
“People are paying roughly about half the cost of the unit and they are paying off each week. If its a 3 bedroom its $50. 2 bedroom unit is $40.These units for the elderly and those with disabilities we don’t require any special payment. Whatever they can afford,” PCN’s national director Father Kevin Barr said.
Father Barr states that despite minor hiccups, construction is well underway.
“We get calls almost every year from elderly and disabled people wanting units. So we hope in the future developments we will have more units but I suppose its something you can never meet the demand,” he said.
Demand for these units is also high although funding is always a challenge.
“We rely on government now mostly for development. The community hall and kindergarten are private sector donations but government has given most of the money for the actual building of the housing units. We did get help from a German agency and we are always looking for more help in the future,” he said.
PCN is using these housing as a solution to informal settlements and this 2nd stage is just the beginning.
“Not only the 3rd but 3rd, 4th, 5th,6th and 7th. There should be 7 stages all together by the time we are finished,” Father Barr explained.
Construction is expected to be completed by April next year.
