Comission 2Fiji has less than two weeks to finalize its report to the International Labour Organization.

The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, Fiji Trade Union Congress and the Ministry of Labour need to meet the deadline to submit their collective report to the ILO.

Fiji was found to be in breach of 6 international law conventions of the ILO.

The ILO then deferred a Commission of Inquiry after the Labour Ministry, FCEF and FTUC agreed to address these infringements found in our labour laws.

Since then, nothing has transpired.

“We were expected to come back to the ILO in June with a joint progress report. We couldn’t have that done. So we have been given another chance until November,” said minister for labour, Jioji Konrote.

Government, trade unions and the private sector are concerned with the impact the Commission of Inquiry would have on the country.

Labour Minister Jioji Konrote says government is hopeful an amicable solution would be reached at least by October 15.

“I’m an opportunist and I have great confidence in this country that despite our distances and perceptions there is enough good will and good faith for us to work together and take the country forward,” he added.
