nrlNo deal was struck at last night’s meeting with almost 300 players trying to boycott this year’s Rugby League World Cup.

In a show of solidarity, about 300 players met in Sydney and via video link to be briefed on the latest pay negotiations with the NRL.

Despite clubs unanimously last week agreeing to grant players an effective 52 percent pay increase, the Rugby League Players Association still wants to see more.

An executive meeting by the RLPA has floated the idea of players withdrawing their services from the tournament which begins in late October, and will again raise the discussion at a mass meeting with 300 players.

NRL clubs claim a player boycott would be in breach of the contractual obligations to promote the game.

lautokaLautoka will make its return to the OFC Champions League in 2018 after the Blues took out the Premier League title, with Ba joining them after finishing second.

Lautoka haven’t made an appearance in the region’s premier international club competition since 2011, and made sure their return would be a deserved one.

The side remains undefeated in the national league, topping the table with 34 points with one last match to play against Rewa.

Despite falling short in both the Fiji Fact and Battle of the Giants, Kamal Swamy’s side regrouped to ensure a fairytale run to the OFC Champions League maintaining an unbeaten run of 13 consecutive league games.

Lautoka President Abdul Kadar said the vision for the association in the lead up to this season was clear.

“Early this year we set up a target and our target was to concentrate on the league from the first game,” he said.

“We started well and led the points table throughout. Although we lost at the Battle of the Giants and the Fiji Fact, our impressive performances at league games motivated the players to play their hearts out.”

He said hard work, sacrifice and commitment from the players as well as the club’s executive officials and families helped the side achieve their objective.

“Credit goes out to the boys for achieving our goal,” Kadar said.

“Not only did we win the title but we maintained our unbeaten run in this competition.”

Greenpeace raises concern on Australia’s commitment

brownWhile the Australian Ambassador for Climate Change tours the Pacific, Greenpeace has raised concerns about Australia’s commitment on climate change action.

Greenpeace Head of Pacific, Matisse Walkden-Brown says, if Australia is to be truthful in its interactions with the Pacific Islands and other vulnerable states, it must first acknowledge its overwhelming and growing contribution to the problem.

In a statement, Greenpeace says Australia is addicted to fossil fuels, with their domestic emissions more than 30 times that of all Pacific nations combined including the large population of Papua New Guinea.

The average Australian emits more than 12 times the carbon of an average Pacific Islander. Even more importantly, Australia currently produces nearly twice as much carbon dioxide emissions, through the coal it exports, than it emits domestically.

Brown says these export emissions are set to double, if the government gets its way and allows mining in the Galilee basin, most notably through Adani’s Car-michael mega mine. A mine which alone will produce three times as much carbon annually, as all of the Pacific nations combined.

Brown says if Australia continues on its path towards becoming the largest exporter of climate change in the world, these Pacific tours to dress up facts and shuffle numbers, will fast become glaringly disrespectful.

vijayFijian golfer Vijay Singh says the best is yet to come for the Natadola Bay Course and the Fiji International.

Australian Jason Norris finished on 14 under par at the weekend to clinch the biggest win of his career.

Local hero Singh was troubled by an elbow injury and finished 13 shots off the pace in a share of 41st place.

The 54 year old helped to redesign 15 of the 18 holes ahead of this year’s tournament but says the course will be even better next year.

“Way better I think – we’ve changed something like 11 greens, 12 greens so every green had different speed, had different issues on it,” he said.

“Probably next year we’re going to have all the greens, all the surroundings of the greens rough cut back and where we needed more rough it’s going to grow back so it’s going to be the same golf course but way better conditions”.

This year’s tournament was moved forward to August after two years playing in October.

Singh managed to attract fellow major winners Angel Cabrera from Argentina and Mike Weir from Canada to the South Pacific and remained hopeful more big names will make the trip in future.

“I hope they come – this is the biggest prize purse on this side of the world so hopefully in future it’s going to get bigger and if the dates are a little better we should be able to get a lot more better players coming here,” said the Fijian.

“October would be a better date because the season finishes in the (United) States so we can get bigger names over here but that’s really is up to the organisers and we’ll have to come up with some good dates”.

Vijay Singh said he had received encouraging feedback about the course re-design from other competitors over the past week and said some holes would prove more challenging with a bit of wind, following a surprisingly calm final two rounds.

Barcelona sue Neymar

NeymarBarcelona are suing footballer Neymar for $15 million for alleged breach of contract and demanding he return a loyalty bonus.

Neymar was paid the bonus after he renewed his deal in October, less than a year before he signed for Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona are also asking for an additional 10 per cent payment due to a delay in their demands being met, after presenting the Brazilian striker with them on August 11th.

“Barcelona have taken these actions in defence of their interests, after Neymar’s contract was rescinded just a few months after he signed on until 2021,” a club statement said.

PSG signed Neymar for a world record $360 million in August, paying his release clause with Barcelona unwilling to negotiate the sale of one of their best players.

Barcelona have passed the complaint to the Spanish football federation after first filing the lawsuit in court, as well as demanding PSG subsidise it, should Neymar not be able to take responsibility for it.

In the days after he signed for the French club, Barcelona refused to pay the reported $40 million instalment of the loyalty bonus which he was due to receive this summer, citing breach of contract.

Earlier this week Neymar criticised the Barcelona board.

“I do have something to say, that I am disappointed with them (Barcelona directors),” he said.

“I spent four very happy years there and left happy, but not with them. For me they shouldn’t be in charge of Barcelona. Barca deserve much better and everyone knows this.”

All Blacks won’t clock off early again

All Blacks assistant coach Ian FosterThe All Blacks are determined there will be no late face-saving opportunity for the Wallabies if they can build another big lead in Saturday’s second Bledisloe Cup Test.

Eyeing the chance to lock away the prized trophy for yet another year at Dunedin’s roofed stadium, the All Blacks have been focusing on their failings in the last half hour of last weekend’s of 54-34 win in Sydney.

When wing Ben Smith scored New Zealand’s eighth try on 47 minutes, a huge blow- out had been on the cards.

But the Wallabies, down 54-6, roared back with four unanswered tries in 17 minutes.

All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster says it’s obvious what went wrong.

“We knocked off and lost a real mental edge about how we executed and how we need to execute and the fact is that it showed in both parts of our game,” said Foster.

“We let in four tries, but some of that was just poor attack – poor decisions in attack rather than anything else.”

“It’s an 80-minute game. We’ve always taken a lot of pride in doing that and we didn’t do it in Sydney.”

Foster noted that it was something that also happened in the British and Irish Lions series this year.

The All Blacks won the first Test against the Lions, but then dropped late leads in losing the second Test and in drawing the decider.

“When you look through our games, I don’t think we’ve won the won the last quarter for the last two to three Tests,” he said.

He was reluctant to lay blame with the bench players, saying it was about the whole team that was on the pitch during the last quarter.

“In Sydney, we were seeing execution mistakes from some players that had been on the field the whole time,” he said.

“It’s not just a matter of looking at the guys who are running off.”

It could have been a case of players trying too hard rather than trusting what they were doing and getting back to a few simple things.

“We’re playing around with it,” Foster said.

“We want to get it right and clearly it wasn’t right in Sydney.”
