Shelter remains a priority with current UN figures revealing , 32 thousand houses damaged by Cyclone Winston.
Commodore Viliame Naupoto, Commander of the RFMF said engineers are leading rebuilding works however homes are not a priority right now.
“We haven’t really started building homes for those that lost their homes. When we responded initially there were some schools which just had a tarpaulin pegged to the ground and that’s what we are revisiting. We are revisiting those places to see if we can build much better temporary shelter ,but not yet we haven’t started building individual homes.”
Government is calling for expressions of interest for the construction of homes.
The military may provide the manpower and engineering expertise but the directives will come from the NDMO.
He adds”It is being tackled very centrally from NDMO because the task and demand for building materials is so big.I’m sure they are looking at some prioritisation as to where it goes too,but we will certainly provide the hands to build.”
