Screen shot 2016-04-25 at 7.09.07 PMA total of 28 adult giant African snails and 500 eggs were intercepted at the Kings Wharf last Friday by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji.

The interception is the largest in the history of Quarantine and Biosecurity Authority in Fiji.

If left unattended it poses a threat to our 400 million dollars agriculture export sector.

The Giant African snail is classified as one of the world’s top 100 invasive species.

The snails and its eggs were found on board a vessel transiting at the Kings Wharf from the Solomon Islands

The Bio security authority of Fiji has already started to carry out mitigating measures.

A notification has also been sent to Bio Security Solomons to carry out investigations and report back to their counterparts here.

Despite challenges increased vigilance is being carried out to ensure invasive species do not enter our country through trade, transport and smuggling.

Fiji is currently free of Giant African Snails and BAF endeavors to keep it away from our shores at all instances.

The Giant African Snail can consume almost 500 different types of plant species.
