Soil health is a major issue that contributes to the decline in sugarcane production in the country.

Fiji Sugar Corporation Cane Development Manager Samu Railoa says the depleting soil health causes the decline in production and field productivity.

The drop in soil health Railoa says is mainly caused by mono-cropping by farmers which has been the practice for over 100 years now.

” For this season, we’re looking at the very low crop of around $1.47M so we’ve got a lot of ground to cover to bring it back to 3 million so the value absorbed GDP and to the economy were only achieved less than 50% of what we should”,” said FSC’s Cane Development Manager, Mr. Samu Railoa.

Sugar cane farmers can now have a product used for treating soil health.

This after Basic Industries Limited signed an agreement with two companies to distribute Aglime to all sugar farmers in Viti Levu, mainly from Sigatoka to Rakiraki.

” We are fortunate that we have aglime locally produced in Tailevu and Basic Industries now manufacturing it and producing it locally so farmers don’t have to look far”
