Screen shot 2016-07-25 at 6.02.21 PM A bus driver who was involved in a fatal accident at the Suva bus stand in 2014 has been sentenced today.

Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo had concurred with the 3 assessors who had found Rabindar Singh guilty.

Suva bus driver Rabindar Singh charged with manslaughter has been sentenced to 8 years in imprisonment today.

On the 6th of May 2014, 49 year old Singh drove a Dee Cees bus around the Suva bus stand knowing that the bus had mechanical problems.

It was revealed in court that the clutch and brakes of the Dee Cees bus were not working when the incident happened.

While sentencing Singh, Justice Salesi Temo said that regardless of the bus having mechanical problems, Singh still decided to drive the bus which later hit the back of a Nasese bus.

As a result, a 46 year old woman and a 3-year-old girl were crushed between two buses.

Justice Temo told Singh that he should always be careful while driving at the Suva bus stand as it is usually full.

The Judge concluded his sentencing saying Singh caused the deceased’s family heartbreak and devastation as they had lost a mother and a children.

Justice Temo has fixed a non parole period of 7 years.
