BimanThe National Federation Party is calling on Government to mount an independent investigation into the affairs of the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

This is in relation to the operations of FSC over the last several years.

NFP Leader Dr Biman Prasad also raised several concerns over the Prime Minister’s recent trip to the 8 cane growing districts.

Prasad argues the Prime Minister and the Attorney General did not provide solutions for the resuscitation of the sugar industry and to improve the livelihood of cane growers.

” The Prime Minister in every speech which he repeated in all the cane districts talked about the politicization of the sugar industry, talked about how politicians like me were misleading the farmers but what is the truth, what is the record?”

Prasad also called on the government to stop blaming NFP.

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has told cane farmers in meetings in the west and north that politicians like Dr Biman are not helping the sugar industry and using them for their political gain.

“Since 2007, the overall sugar production and the number of growers have declined for example in 2006 there were 18, 636 farmers, in 2015 there are only 12, 872 farmers , in 2006 we produced 3.2 million tonnes of cane, in 2015 we produced only 1.8 million tonnes of cane with periods of increases between 2011 right up to 2015 but the overall cane production has declined” said Prasad
