eight_col_DSC01588The national flag will not be changed for now.

The announcement was made in statement by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who stated the flag will not be changed in the foreseeable future.

This flag will not change anytime soon.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has said that it has been deeply moving for him to witness the way Fijians have rallied around the national flag as our rugby Sevens team brought home the 7s rugby Olympic Gold.

While he remains convinced personally that we need to replace some of the flag’s colonial symbols it has been apparent to the Government since February that the flag should not be changed for the foreseeable future.

The Prime Minister says it is a question of resetting national priorities as our people continue to recover from Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Meanwhile, similar sentiments have been shared by Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum on the decision not to change the national flag.

“In particular in the wake of cyclone Winston our priorities need to be re-set in the sense we have a very huge rebuild program that will take us a couple of years to recover from.” said Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

Sayed Khaiyum added that they have not set a time frame on when the flag will be change.

“We want everybody to wave their flag and celebrate the event when we welcome our team in particular the 7s team when they come back on Sunday it’s a great occasion for us.” added Sayed Khaiyum.

For now the noble banner blue will remain flying high.

“As he said he doesn’t see the need for the flag to be changed for the foreseeable future.” said Sayed Khaiyum.
