Sexual offenses cover a quarter of Corrections Population

Sexual related offenses are the most common among inmates who are serving their sentences at Correctional Services nation-wide.

From the total of 2 thousand 1 hundred and nine inmates Fiji wide, this covers a quarter of the Corrections population.

“Right now the most common offense that we have identified, we have the largest number of inmates in the country we have sexual offenses. Surprisingly we have 523, so almost a quarter of the prison population currently are those of sexual
nature,” said Assistant Commissioner of Correction Operations – SSOC Apimeleki Taukei.

The largest number of inmates are in the Central Division which covers the five institutions of Suva, The Women’s Corrections, Nasinu, Levuka and Suva Remand Centre.

“In the breakdown within our institutions in Naboro we have a total of 435, in the West in Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki we have a total of 554. In the North we have a total of 226, for the institutions of Labasa and Taveuni and for Suva we have eight hundred and ninety four.”
